Bill Clinton is on a roll and reeking of desperation. Yesterday he took to the radio in Philadelphia to let off a new salvo of hypocrisy and lies in a desperate attempt to score a few last minute votes on Obama for his wife:
I think that they played the race card on me. We now know, from memos from the campaign that they planned to do it along.First, this is absolutely unsubstantiated, and you can be certain if the Clintons had any memo evidence of a "vast race-baiting conspiracy" against them they would have pasted copies of it to every lamppost, door and wall in PA. Undoubtedly the memo he is referring to was an Obama campaign internal memo that the media got wind of months ago which simply outlined an unsettling pattern of racially charged comments from the Clinton campaign and their surrogates in the early months of the campaign (before the backlash in South Carolina). This was in no way trying to "playing the race card" on Bill or the Clinton campaign, it was only acknowledging that the Clintons seemed to be playing the race card.
In one of my first blogs I did a lengthy post describing each of the major incidences of race-baiting by the Clinton campaign, many of which were mentioned in the Obama memo. The purpose of race-baiting, by definition, is to "bait" another person (Obama) into talking about race by subtly making it an issue. Then when the other person "takes the bait" and calls the baiters on using race, the other side says "AH HA! YOU are using race!". It is a ridiculous charge, but a potentially brilliant strategy, one employed by the right (championed by Fox News), making this one of the first examples of the Clintons resorting to GOP tactics in this election. In the end it didn't work because Obama never took the bait, and with Bill's infamous Jesse Jackson comments taking it beyond the realm of subtlety, the gig was up as they say.
Yet here we are again, with Bill trying to re-write history, and accuse Obama of being the one who engineered a strategy of race-baiting, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
Oh yes, and after the interview was over Bill added this which was picked up by the microphones that had yet to be turned off:
I don't think I should take any shit from anybody on that, do you?Well Bill, you were the one who brought it up, it seems like a bit of projection to me. Or maybe you know Hillary's campaign is about dead and now you are looking to patch the damage your actions and comments during this campaign have done to your reputation and legacy. You really do have to love all this though, coming from the same person who just a few days ago claimed "this is a contact sport. If you don't want to play, keep your uniform off" while accusing Obama of whining (when he wasn't), and now here he is yet again trying to point the finger while complaining about things he himself is guilty of. Life just isn't fair is it Bill? But hey, when you feel the heat, just lie and lie again, then get angry, then accuse others of lying, right Bill?
But I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time – never. These allegations are false.
Note: Just to be clear, in case you don't actually take the time to read my previous post on the Clintons' race-baiting, contrary to what the Clintons like to say, no one is accusing them of being racist themselves, that isn't what this is about, it is about whether or not they would be willing to cynically exploit racism in others for their personal political ambitions, and I think it would be hard to argue after seeing how this campaign has played out since then that they Clintons will say and do anything to get ahead.
Update: Wow, now it is getting crazy. Today a reporter asked Bill Clinton about his accusation that Obama played the race card on him. Bill's response? "I never said that", haha, you can't make this kind of stuff up, read the exchange below:
NBC/NJ: “Sir, what did you mean yesterday when you said that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?”Now Bill's comments from yesterday really didn't leave any wiggle room there, because he flat out accused Obama's campaign of playing "the race card" against him, and then cited nonexistent evidence of their conspiracy to smear his good name. There is no wiggle room. And yet here Bill is, the very next day flat out lying to a reporter and saying he never said what he was recorded saying, and on top of that he is rude to the reporter asking the question and accused him of making things up to get a story! It's simply amazing to watch Bill Clinton at work. It reminds me of Hillary's Bosnia lies, when she disparaged Sinbad after he gave an accurate account of their Bosnia trip, and then proceeded to repeat her previous lies. It is like the Clintons have a pathological addiction to lying, as if they can't help themselves from lying, and then when caught in a lie, lying some more. How can anyone believe anything that comes out of this guy's mouth? And he has been doing this throughout the entire campaign, going from school to church to townhall meeting flat out lying about Obama, rewriting history, distorting comments, saying whatever he has to to convince people that Obama is evil and Hillary is their hero. What bothers me the most is that he gets away with it time and time again. This is just the latest example. The guy is pathological. They are both pathological. We should probably test Chelsea to see if she is infected too.
CLINTON: “When did I say that, and to whom did I say that?”
NBC/NJ: “On WHYY radio yesterday”
CLINTON: “No, no, no. That’s not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games (TPIP: Note Bill Clinton whining about the media again and note previous hypocrisy), and I’m not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us, and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day.”
NBC/NJ: “Respectfully sir, though, you did say …”
CLINTON: “Have a nice day.” [continues shaking hands with supporters]. I said what I said, you can go and look at the interview. And if you’ll be real honest, you’ll also report what the question was and what the answer was.”
NBC/NJ: “They asked you if you regretted your comparing Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama on the day after the South Carolina primary.”
CLINTON: “And I pointed out that I did not do that, and that I complimented them both. And that Jesse Jackson took no offense. And I called him myself, I said, ‘Did you find that offensive?’ And he said no.
Again, here is what Clinton told WHYY.
INTERVIEWER (RE: Jackson comment): “Do you think that was a mistake, and would you do that again?"
CLINTON: "No. I think that they played the race card on me. And we now know, from memos from the campaign and everything, that they planned to do it along."
Update #2: There is another, more serious, explanation, which I'd feel bad about if it turns out to be true. Bill Clinton could be showing the symptoms of early onset Alzheimer's, and he could really have no clue that he had said the things he has said. Although he showed the same symptoms back in the 90s when he couldn't remember his protracted affair with his intern, which takes us back to the original diagnosis. For his sake I hope he is just a pathological liar because seeing him make an ass of himself in such a public way due to the effects of a serious disease would be pretty sad. I would really feel bad for him. Although he could perhaps make some good out of it by becoming a spokesperson for Alzheimer's awareness, kind of like Bob Dole was for erectile dysfunction. Either way, they should probably take him out of the field.
